Air Conditioning vs Heat Pumps: What's the Difference?

If you've ever wondered whether you need a heat pump or an air conditioner, you're not alone.

Here in New Zealand, we talk about heat pumps all the time, particularly when winter rolls around. But when summer arrives and the house starts heating up, suddenly we're talking about air conditioning.

So, are they actually different things?

The short answer? Not necessarily. The reverse-cycle heat pumps commonly installed in New Zealand do both heating and cooling.

Why Do We Call Them Heat Pumps in New Zealand?

It's largely down to how we use them.

In New Zealand, heat pumps have traditionally been marketed for keeping homes warm during winter. So that's the name most of us have become familiar with.

In warmer parts of the world, similar systems are commonly called air conditioners because cooling is their main job.

But a reverse-cycle heat pump can do both.

In winter, it transfers heat from outside into your home. In summer, it reverses the process, removing heat from inside and transferring it outdoors.

One system. Two jobs.

Can My Heat Pump Really Cool My Home?

Absolutely!

If you have a reverse-cycle heat pump, it should have a cooling mode, usually shown by a snowflake symbol on your remote.

Switch to cooling mode, set a comfortable temperature, and your heat pump will work to remove heat from the room.

It's a handy feature that some homeowners don't make full use of, particularly if they've always thought of their heat pump as something for winter.

Is Air Conditioning Expensive to Run?

Modern reverse cycle heat pumps can be an energy efficient way to cool your home.

However, running costs depend on several things, including the size of your system, how well your home is insulated, your chosen temperature and how long you run it.

Choosing the right sized unit for your space is important. A system that's not suited to the room may struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature.

That's where professional advice makes a difference.

Why We Recommend Panasonic

At Heatcool, we install Panasonic heat pumps and air conditioning systems for both residential and commercial applications throughout Taranaki.

We choose Panasonic for its reliability, energy efficiency and extensive product range.

From wall-mounted units for bedrooms and living areas to floor console systems and larger commercial solutions, there are options to suit a wide range of spaces.

The important thing is finding the right system for your property, rather than simply choosing a unit based on price or appearance.

Don't Forget About Servicing

If your heat pump has been keeping you warm all winter, it's worth getting it checked before switching over to cooling for summer.

When a heat pump is cooling, it produces condensation that needs to drain away.

If the drain becomes blocked with dirt or debris, water can start leaking from the indoor unit.

Regular servicing helps keep the drainage system clear, maintains airflow and gives your heat pump the best chance of performing efficiently when you need it.
